Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) is a herbaceous plant that contains phytoestrogens that have effects similar to estrogen. This study aimed to determine the effectivity of fennel fruit infusion on bone calcium content of ovariectomied rats. This research used 25 female rats Sprague Dawley and the rats were divided into 5 group:(1) negative control group (KN) given distilled water 1 ml; (2) positive control group (KP) given ethinyl estradiol 0.045 mg/100 g body weight; (3) dose group 1 (D1) given fennel fruit infusion 73 mg/100 g body weight; (4) dose group 2 (D2) given fennel fruit infusion 146 mg/100 g body weight; (5) dose group 3 (D3) given fennel fruit infusion 292 mg/100 g body weight. Treatment with distilled water ,ethinyl estradiol and fennel fruit infusion were done for 15 days by oral route. At the end of treatment, the bone (tibia fibula) were then obtained and analyzed for calcium levels using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) reader. The results showed that the highest dose of infusion fruit fennel (D3) has a higher calcium levels compared with D1 and D2. This result also showed the effectiveness of fennel fruit infusion in increasing bone calcium levels for ovariectomied rats.
