COFFEE PRODUCTION IN EPHIOPIA

this article considers the relevance of the coffee production in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is the leading African coffee exporter in 53 countries, coffee accounts for over 60% of export. The area of coffee plantations in Ethiopia exceeds 525 thousand hectares. In the 2014/15 year, Ethiopia exported about 180000 tons of coffee. Areascoffee producers of Ethiopia are joined in 5 major geographical zones: North, Southwest, West, South-East and Harar and 16 administrative regions. The main coffee provinces of Ethiopia: Oromia, there is more than 64% of plantations; region Peoples of the South – 35%; Gambella – 1%. The optimum of rainfall is from 1500 to 2100 mm and mean value of air temperature is from 12 to 14° C. In Ethiopia the cultivated areas of coffee trees are planted under the cover of local trees or planting with fruit trees or other cultivated plants. In some regions coffee trees grow in partial shade or unshaded (sun coffee). In the forest farmers are only harvesting and processing. In some plantations they make thinning trees, controlling weeds and planting seedlings to rejuvenate. The most known Ethiopian varieties are: Harar, Sidamo, Irhace, Lima.
