During the last decades multidisciplinary research efforts have been developed internationally aimed at improving the knowledge and understanding of the interaction of men with the marine environment since the earliest times, and of the historical variability in coastal and open sea ecology. The objective of this chapter is to develop these lines of historical-scientific-technical research for Alboran Sea and Strait of Gibraltar, from the sixteenth century. To this end, local interrelations between both historical and marine sciences data are presented, in order to understand the impact of the climate variability and human activity on several marine species distribution and abundance. In addition, to identifying the most economically, socially, and culturally important historical fisheries in the whole area, clear focal ecosystem components are established, with the decisive roles of the Strait of Gibraltar, the quasi-permanent NW-Alboran Sea upwelling and the Bay of Malaga. Our exposition on human interactions includes, throughout the centuries, mainly fishers, consumers, fishery management technicians and scientists (naturalists, fishery researchers and oceanographers).
