In this paper a new methodological approach to the problem of composing regional natural forest fire danger scales is presented. During the research normative legal acts and literary sources regarding natural forest fire danger determination in Russian Federation and other countries were used. Current natural forest fire danger scale does not consider connection between fire season periods, prevailing vegetable forest fuel types and most probable forest fire types. Moreover, the list of unclassified forest cites does not exist. Forest and unforest land categories are not fully taken into account. The term «Regional natural forest fire danger scale» is defined in given methodological approach. This scale is defined for Russian Federation administrative regional units. Regional natural forest fire danger scale is composed on the regional forest typology basis. Forest covered land categories and unforest land categories are considered in more details. Connection between forestfire ignition objects, fire season periods, prevailing vegetable forest fuel types and most probable forest fire types is established. Winter, spring, summer and autumn are considered as approximate fire season periods. Forest fuel types providing ground forest fire ignitions are considered as prevailing vegetable forest fuel types. Ground, soil and crown forest fires are considered as main fire types. Part of regional natural forest fire danger scale for Karelian Republic is given. This scale is composed on the basis of a new methodological approach.
