The research has been made at the IITA (Ibadan, Nigeria) in the period going from May 25th to June 28th 1988 in order to find a substitute to sawdust as the substrate of germination, such as soil without mulch (S), soil with mulch (SM), sawdust (D), mixture of soil with sawdust plus mulch (SSM). The plant material used is the variety of yam T DR 197. The experimental appliance is that of complete aleatory blocks in ten replications. At the end of this experience, it has been established firstly that the five treatments are not different from the germination point of view. Secondly, the treatments soil without mulch and soil plus sawdust without mulch have shown a high number of non germinated small scale-fragments; thirdly, the substrates soil without sawdust, sawdust plus mulch and soil plus mulch have equally presented a high number of rotten mini-fragments of yam.
