Individual black wildbeest territories in suboptimal Acacia karoo savanna in the Willem Pretorius Game Reserve, Orange Free State, are typically established in less densely vegetated areas with excellent visibility. Isolated trees within a 100 m radius from territorial stamping grounds are significantly different with respect to the height of the undergrowth and the lower leaf line of the canopy compared to the trees further away. Other features recorded in association with the trees suggest that vegetation horning and demonstration-threat displays by the territorial owners are mainly responsible for this phenomenon.
