Heating wood and charcoal supplies remain an important source of energy in the tropical African towns, in Kinshasa in particular. A first rough assessment is made using the results of a 5 day field investigation conducted in May 1990 on the three main roads entering the town as well as the analysis of rail and river traffic average. Individual annual consumption in 1990 was 160 kg per habitant of dry wood. Two main axes were used: 77 per cent for the Matadi road (Lower Zaire), 18 per cent for the Kikwit one (Bandundu).
