The degradation of Macrotermes bellicosus mounds has been followed on a hard-pan plateau in a Sudanian savanna, North-East of Cote-d'Ivoire. Following a heavy colonies mortality, mounds soil was eroded and scattered in the surroundings. This soil is richer in finer particles than the control soil, due to a selection by the termites. Mound soil is poorer in total carbon and cation exchange capacity than the control soil. The inner mound (habitacle) is richer in potassium than the outer mound and the control soil.
