Polytrichum alpinum Hedw. is reported from Belgium for the first time. The species occurs in the valley of the Hoegne rivulet near Hockai in the Hautes-Fagnes. Several stands, always without sporophytes, have been found close to the rivulet. The identification and habitat are addressed. We think that the species has been overlooked before since other Polytrichum species with similar habitus commonly occur in the area.
