Evaluation of sugar beet main quality features through the analysis of the diffusion juices produced by a pilot plant
2001
Rosso, F. | Candolo, G. (Agronomica Consortile, Ferrara (Italy))
Different tests were carried out at the Eridania pilot plant of Contarina (Rovigo, Italy) during summer 2000 to establish the technological quality trend of the beets in relation to different storage times of different types of beet. Pilot plant testing of beet technological characteristics was comparable to large scale tests in the sugar refinery. In particular 4 beet varieties were analysed (1 type N, 2 type EN and 1 type Z) after different storage times in the field (14-24-48 h) and a variety type E analysed 24-48-72-96 hours after harvest. The results confirm a decrease in juice purity with longer storage times, due to beet degradation caused by high summer temperatures. Juice purity analysis by the different formulae yielded similar results. The varieties behaved differently in terms of reducing sugar content over time. The technological quality of the different stages was especially high, in line with the outcome of the 2000 beet campaign.
