The use of geomatic for rural land management

Maps are useful tools for land management as they contain a lot of information about space. Softwares enabling the digitization of maps are known as : Geographic Information System (G.I.S.). In Prefix, the software we are using, geographical space is divided into territories called 'geographical domain' and within a domain, data are stored by theme in 'sub-domains'. Prefix is also a database management system which manages a user information system named 'entity'. This contains two kinds of information : cartographic information representing a physical image of the object and data concerning the text. Each provincial direction of the 'Office Wallon de Developpement Rural' (O.W.D.R.) has two work stations connected by a local network. Prefix software is applied in 'land re-allotment' by the O.W.D.R. The purpose of this operation is to exchange small plots of land to form one or more larger blocks which are easier to farm. This regrouping is accompanied by other operations such as road construction, hydraulic works, mostly in order to improve farm profitability, but also to promote links between villages and more generally to improve the quality of life and ensure environmental protection. The acquisition of numerous administrative, technical, topographical and landscape oriented information is needed. To conclude, we are convinced that G.I.S. will have further important developments. All the operations involved in land reallotment (in Wallonia) are being treated with Prefix which has many other potential applications.
