2006
W.V. Bleisch | D.W. Dexiang | K. Katsigris
This report presents the findings, analysis, and recommendations of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) on the Stora Enso (a Finnish-Swedish joint venture) forest plantation project in Guangxi Zhuang, China. The authors argue that when fully operational, the plantation project will bring about a variety of impacts, some potentially positive and others potentially negative. The ESIA has found that while the issues surrounding sustainable productivity and the environment can be adequately addressed, the challenges facing Stora Enso relate to effective engagement with landholders and the surrounding local communities. To mitigate existing and potential negative impacts, a number of recommendations are put forward including: Stora Enso should maintain its commitment to a robust program of applied R&D and maintain its engagement with research providers in China and other countries to maintain a position as an employer of choice for plantation workers in southern Guangxi, Stora Enso should offer a safe and healthy work environment mechanisms should be put in place to provide guidance to plantation managers based on the results of monitoring, so that management practices can be adapted as needed support for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainable plantation policies should remain a firm commitment.
