The purpose of this report is to present the third phase of a A research and development program which was initiated by the members of the Ship Production Committee of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. The cost was shared by U.S. Maritime Administration, the American Bureau of Shipping and Ingalls Shipbuilding. The aim of this project was directed to the production of three dimensional sample illustrations of weld surface conditions, applicable to visual weld inspection. Phase I addressed the conditions of cluster porosity, scattered porosity, and undercut; Phase II addressed the conditions of weld surface roughness, irregular contour, and re-entrant angle. Phase III is addressed to the manufacture of the plastic weld replicas.
