There are a variety of visions for the next generation of engineering software tools for computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) applications. Most of these visions include some form of distributed software, either across local networks, the World Wide Web or the Internet. To date, integration of engineering software has been done predominantly (though not exclusively) on the "desktop." Predictions regarding the next generation of computational tools describe bringing higher capabilities within reach of smaller companies and allowing engineers to tailor a set of tools to an application through the use of distributed software tools which are accessed across networks. Present computing technology provides a number of opportunities untapped by the engineering software community. However, applications of these technologies in the engineering community are primarily still at the research stage and the area of integration of distributed software is still in its infancy.
