Hexavalent Chromium: Toxicological Effects and Means for Removal from Aqueous Solution

There has been concern recently of the possibility of long-term disturbances of the environmental ecology by hexavalent chromium discharged in industrial and, in some cases, naval waste waters. To aid in the assessment of these potential dangers, the literature was surveyed to provide a perspective overview of the toxicities of hexavalent chromium toward plant and animal. The means available for reducing chromate concentrations in waste waters to ppm levels were reviewed for suitability for Navy usage. The techniques considered were chemical reduction, with subsequent precipitation of the trivalent chromium product; ion exchange; direct precipitation; ion flotation; electrochemical reduction; and electrodialysis. Background and orientational information are furnished for use in considering Navy chromate pollution problems and their rectification.
