本州中部以南、朝鮮、東シナ海、東インド諸島に分布する。外洋性のもので、6～7月の産卵期には内湾に入り、水の中層を群泳し、しばしば河口にやって来る。秋には外海に去るが、孵化後4～5ヶ月の幼魚は3cm位に成長すると沖合に出る。建網、刺網、曳網等で捕獲する。関西ではすこぶる美味の魚とし、特に味噌漬、刺身として賞味する。全長60cmに達する。
