本種の胸鰭は17軟条でカサゴ(18軟条)より少なく、また眼窩の下縁に後方に向かう顕著な1棘が存在する(カサゴにはこの棘がない)。体色はカサゴより赤く、著しく黄色味を帯びている。卵胎生で多回産卵である。千葉県以南の我が国沿岸に棲息する岩礁性の底魚で、その分布は広く南支那海にまで及んでいる。カサゴよりやや深海性で約30cmまで成長する。食用とする。
