The general purpose of this study was to expand existing biological and physical/chemical data for the St. Marys River during 1982 and 1983 to help assess environmental impacts from proposed navigation season extension. Previous investigations were limited mainly to localities over some 64 km (40 mi). This report contains data on the following topics: physical and chemical aspects of water; winter sedimentation rates; benthic macroinvertebrates; aquatic macrophytes and primary productivity; icththyoplankton; and, juvenile and adult fish. Potential effects of winter navigation activities are of special concern in narrow channwl areas of connecting waters of the Great Lakes such as exist in the St. Marys River. An understanding of the biological systems within these is important for valid impact assessment to be made.
