Show more [+] Less [-]In this report, the results of an inventory of sea spike characteristics is given. Furthermore, the possibility to detect sea spikes with standard ship navigation radars is explored. In literature it was found that the most distinct properties of sea spikes are the sudden increase in polarization ratio MH/VV and Doppler velocity. These properties cannot be measured with current navigation radars, but future navigation radars will be coherent. It is therefore worthwhile to investigate the added value of using coherent sea clutter data in the sea spike detection and classification process.
