Environmental Assessment of Makua Military Reservation in Hawaii

The Army has conducted several site-specific environmental studies to address the major public concerns at Makua Military Reservation (MMR). The monitoring and numerical technologies used at MMR may be of interest for other sites with the similar problems. Past sampling has shown that none of the samples had detectable concentrations of energetics or semi-volatile organic compounds. The nitrate and nitrite concentrations in the samples were below risk-based health criteria and drinking water standards. Detectable levels of barium, chromium, lead, mercury, and nickel were also below risk-based health criteria and drinking water standards. The study concluded that the basal aquifer at MMR was not contaminated.
