SURFACE TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS AS INDICATORS OF THE POSITION OF THE GULF STREAM
1953
Strack, S. L.
The possibility of determining the position of the Gulf Stream from an examination of surface temperature gradients was investigated. A comparison was made of the surface, 100-m, and where possible, 200-m temperatures from 99 BT sections across or well into the Gulf Stream. Agreement between surface and deep temperature gradients was good for the main currents of the Stream from November to May; however, at no season of the year did surface temperature gradients in the slope water inshore of the Gulf Stream reliably reflect those in deep water.
