Tests were conducted on a 1:50-scale model of the Harry S. Truman spillway and powerhouse in Benton County, Missouri to investigate the cause of and help develop a solution for scour damage on the spillway stilling basin apron. Circulation of rock within the stilling basin was considered to be the primary cause for the scour based upon flow patterns. Various flow conditions were simulated for both powerhouse and spillway releases to assist in the evaluation of undesirable scour-producing flow patterns. Pressure transducers were used to determine flow pressures in the upstream portion of the basin. Test results, along with observations, led to the conclusion that removal of a portion of the flip lip was not a viable solution for the prevention of scour in the stilling basin caused by the circulation of rock during a range of flow conditions. The purposes of the project are to provide flood control, hydroelectricity, recreation, and fish and wildlife habitats.
