Management Approaches for Water Quality Enhancement at Whitney Point and East Sidney Lake, New York
1990
Ashby, Steven L. | Kennedy, Robert H.
Increased demands on the multi-use resource provided by reservoirs require development of comprehensive management plans for maintenance of acceptable water quality. Identification of potential for adverse quality, which may impair usage, is followed by assessments of enhancement techniques and application, if feasible. These principles were applied at two Corps of Engineers reservoirs for assessment of water quality conditions and delineation of management opportunities for water quality enhancement. Water quality is described from detailed studies conducted during the summer growing season. Interactions with other agencies with primary responsibilities in the watershed are detailed. Perceptions of water quality from user viewpoints, regional comparisons, and textbook values are presented. Management opportunities are identified, and a management plan is recommended for one of the reservoirs, East Sidney Lake, New York. Keywords: Water quality, Phytoplankton, Plankton blooms, Algae, Water pollution.
