Abstract. The properties of residual fuels commonly used in marine engines depend on the quality of the crude oil as well as refining and purifying methods. Impurities (ash, water, metals or other solids) present in these fuels can cause serious problems during combustion: deposits in the combustion chamber, escape and admission valves, piston rings, injectors and fuel pump. This paper refers to different residual fuel cleaning methods. Lastly, taking as an experimental field an electrical generating plant that uses the marine motors man b&w l+v-28/32h, it is shown how impurities formed during manufacturing, transportation, storage and fuel consumption effect the quality of combustion and cause damage to elements in the system..
