Embrapa Environment hosted the “First Workshop about Water, Agriculture and Environment in State of São Paulo: Advances and Challenges”, in Jaguariúna – SP, September 16th and 17th, 2003. The aim of this event was to provide the opportunity of meeting the academic, scientific, and technical community interested in and related to water resources, agricultural and environmental issues of São Paulo State. Different sectors participated, such as universities, research centers and institutes, non-government organizations (NGOs) and, consulting companies. Four themes were brought to discussion: a) “Climate, Water and Agriculture”; b) “Groundwater, Agriculture and Environment”; c) “Information System of Water Resources”; d) “Irrigation, Reuse and Multiple Use of Water”. After the presentations, discussions about progress and challenge from each thematic were carried out, resulting on the following general considerations: the necessity of creating more efficient mechanisms in order to lead the results of researches to society decision makers; the necessity of validating the establishment of technological packages under subtropical conditions; and the adoptions of alternatives as proposals of future actions, for example, the creation of award mechanisms to farmers who adopt practices in order to conserve the natural resources.
