Restricted intake and lipid inclusion: effects on ovarian follicular development in Santa Inês ewe lambs.

Abstract: The reproductive efficiency is directly related to the nutritional management. The diet lipid inclusion, especially with enhanced sources of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids, is positively associated to the ovarian follicular development of ruminants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of toasted soybean grain addition on restricted or ad libitum feeding on ovarian follicular development of Santa Inês ewe lambs. Thirty-five ewe lambs with initial body weight 21.5 ± 0.27 kg and age of 91.6 ± 1.36 were blocked according to initial body weight and allocated to the following treatments: ad libitum intake of a diet without lipid inclusion (ALI-WLI, 3.5% Ether Extract ? EE, n = 9); restrict intake of the WLI diet (RI-WLI, n = 9); ad libitum intake of a lipid inclusion diet represented by toasted and cracked soybean grain (ALI-LID, 9.8% EE, n = 8); and restrict intake of the LID diet (RI-LID, n = 9). Diets that were offered to the animals from RI-WLI and RI-LID was limited to 80% of the intake of the animals from the respective ad libitum treatments. The ovarian activity was evaluated in all animals by ultrasonographic exams (ALOKA, SSD 500, 7.5 MHz), on alternate days during 10 days at the ages of three, four and six months, while a single evaluation was performed at the ages of five and seven months. Follicles with diameter ?3 mm were measured in real time. The diameter of the follicles was calculated as the average of the two greatest antral cavity diameters. The diameter of the largest follicle was analyzed throughout time using MIXED (SAS®).The number of class ?3-5 mm and >5 mm follicles was also analyzed throughout time by general linear mixed models, considering Poisson distribution and log function, using GLIMIX (SAS®) procedure. The diameter of the largest follicle, the number of ?3-5 mm and >5mm follicles did not differ among treatments (P > 0.05). The number of ?3-5 mm follicles increased with age, reached its maximum of 2.49 follicles at the age of 168 days and then decreased (?= 0.00027x2+0.09148x-6.83727, P < 0.05). The number of follicles >5 mm presented marked increase after 150 days (?=-0.00037x2+0.1639x-18.0185, P < 0.05). The follicle diameter increased linearly according to the age of the animals (?=15.68177+0.1599x, P > 0.05). Probably with the increased LH pulse frequency approaching puberty provided the follicular development, which grew in size until reaching class >5 mm follicles. In conclusion, the diameter of the largest follicle and the number of >5 mm follicles were not influenced by the restricted intake diet nor the lipid inclusion; however, they increased in a direct relationship with the age of the animals. [Restrição alimentar e suplementação lipídica: efeitos sobre o desenvolvimento folicular ovariano em cordeiras da raça Santa Inês]. A eficiência reprodutiva é diretamente relacionada ao manejo nutricional. A suplementação lipídica nas dietas, principalmente com fontes ricas em ácidos graxos das famílias ômega-6 e ômega-3, tem sido positivamente associada ao desenvolvimento folicular ovariano de ruminantes. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da inclusão de soja grão tostada de forma ad libitum ou restrita sobre o desenvolvimento folicular ovariano de cordeiras Santa Inês. Trinta e cinco cordeiras da raça Santa Inês com peso inicial de 21,5±0,27 kg e idade de 91,6±1,36 dias foram utilizadas. Os animais foram blocados de acordo com o peso inicial e distribuídos aos tratamentos: consumo ad libitum de uma dieta sem inclusão lipídica (AL-SIL, 3,5% de extrato etéreo ? EE, n=9); consumo restrito da dieta SIL (CR-SIL, n=9); consumo ad libitum de uma dieta com inclusão lipídica na forma de soja grão tostada e quebrada (AL-IL, 9,8% EE, n=8); e consumo restrito da dieta IL (CR-IL, n=9). O fornecimento das dietas aos animais dos tratamentos CR-SIL e CR-IL foi restrito a 80% do consumo dos animais dos respectivos tratamentos ad libitum. A atividade ovariana foi avaliada em todos os animais por meio de exames ultrassonográficos (ALOKA, SSD 500, 7,5 MHz) em dias alternados por 10 dias aos três, quatro e seis meses de idade, enquanto uma única avaliação foi realizada aos cinco e sete meses de idade. Folículos com ? 3 mm foram mensurados em tempo real. O diâmetro dos folículos foi calculado como a média dos dois maiores diâmetros da cavidade antral. O diâmetro do maior folículo foi analisado ao longo do tempo, utilizando o procedimento MIXED (SAS®). O número de folículos nas categorias de ? 3-5 mm e > 5 mm foi analisado ao longo do tempo utilizando modelos lineares mistos generalizados, considerando a distribuição de Poisson e função de ligação log, utilizando o procedimento GLIMIX (SAS®). O diâmetro do maior folículo, o número de folículos ?3-5 mm e de folículos >5m não diferiram entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). O número de folículos ?3-5 mm aumentou com a idade, atingiu o máximo de 2,49 folículos aos 168 dias e depois declinou (?= 0,00027x2+0,09148x-6,83727, P<0,05). O número de folículos >5mm apresentou aumento mais acentuado a partir de 150 dias (?=-0,00037x2+0,1639x-18,0185, P<0,05). O diâmetro folicular aumentou de forma linear de acordo com o aumento da idade do animal (?=15,68177+0,1599x, P<0,05). Provavelmente com o aumento da frequência dos pulsos de LH com a aproximação da puberdade promoveu o desenvolvimento dos folículos, que aumentaram em tamanho até atingirem a categoria de folículos >5mm. Concluindo, o diâmetro do maior folículo e o número de folículos >5mm não foram influenciados pela restrição alimentar ou pela suplementação lipídica, mas aumentaram com a idade dos animais.
