Granulation in three sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) varieties in Ghana

A survey of citrus growing areas in the tropical rainy forests of Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo regions of Ghana was conducted as a result of complaints from farmers who had difficulty in disposing of the fruit of Washington Navel, and the low juice content of Hamlin and Shamouti which are sweet orange cultivars. The survey revealed that the incidence of granulation, a physiological defect in the fruits was responsible. Washington Navel was found to be the worst affected, followed by Hamlin. Shamouti was moderately affected. Asuansi, a locally named variety known to be very juicy, and used as control was virtually free from granulation. Granulation was worse for all three varieties during the major season than the minor season
