Preliminary rearing of Glossina palpalis palpalis (R-D)(Diptera-Glossinidae) in the laboratory

The paper discusses the experimental techniques and the preliminary observations on the reproductive performance of Glossina palpalils palpalis, a riverine species of tsetse fly reared in the laboratory at Kwabenya (Ghana). Only partial success at attempts to establish a productive and self-sustaining colony were obtained. This was caused by high pupal and adult mortality. The mean duration of pupal development ranged between 23.6 and 28.7 days with percentage emergence of adults at 93.7% and 66.2% from the two batches used and that of the F2 pupae at 32.3%. Fecundity ranged from 0.7 to 1.6 while daily mortality rate was 1.03% with higher deaths recorded for females. Starvation, caused by poor feeding response to the guinea pigs used as host, or inadequate feeding regime, was seen as the cause of 81.5% deaths
