The role of supervised credit in the development of the oil palm industry in the West Akim Abuakwa district of Ghana using the linear programming approach is discussed. Loans for working capital in the oil palm industry increased profits and production, modified the pattern of resource use and induced technical change with a shift towards modern technologies. Use of labour increased by 16.04 % to 30 % with an estimated 96.5 % of loans used to hire labour. Apparent shortages of agricultural credit were caused by divergencies between the shadow price of working capital and the interest rate charged on the loans
