A study of the reproductive performance of sheep and goats on small farm units in the Greater Accra area of Ghana
1988
Fynn, K.E.
Reports observations on reproductive parameters of fertility, prolificacy and per centage offspring weaned, for flocks of sheep and goats in small farm units in the Accra area(Ghana). With not more than 20 animals of the backyard farms, lambing/kidding were common and observed twice or thrice a year with incidence of multiple births higher in goats (61.1 + or - 7.6). Goat flocks had higher prolificacy and fertility than sheep flocks but offspring weaning per centage for both were similar. Castration was practised more on sheep than goats. The West African dwarf goat and the Djallonke sheep breeds are the breeds kept by the backyard farmers
