Two experiments were conducted in 1975 at the Legon Farm, University of Ghana, in the coastal savanna zone in Ghana to study the effect of seed bed preparation on maize production. Three types of seed beds, flat, ridge and furrow, were examined. Yields were not increased by planting in furrows or ridges. Unfavourable physical and chemical properties of exposed subsoil in the furrows, and high soil temperatures and low soil moisture in the ridges appear to be some of the reasons for the poor performance.
