Phosphate status and phosphorus adsorption isotherms of some soils of Ghana under cocoa

Phosphorus adsorption maxima of 12 cocoa soils from the ecological regions of Ghana and their relationship with some soil properties were studied. The adsorption maxima ranged from 90.32 to 296.80 IlgP/g soil. Dithionite extractable Fe was shown to be the most important single factor controlling P-adsorption in the soils. However, percent clay content and organic C also tend to influence P-adsorption. In these soils, Ca - P and Fe - P may be the same available P extracted with the 0.2 N 8,SO. and 0.5 M NaHCo] but AI is not important in the P-adsorption of the soils. Percent p32 adsorbed by these soils is related to adsorption maxima and can be used to describe the relative adsorption capacities of the soils. Saturation percentage for some of these soils may not be an adequate expression of the P availability.
