Tables for routine mechanical analysis of soils by the hydrometer method

In the calculation of effective depth values for four different hydrometers (ASTM 151 H, 152 H, BS 1377 and Tower's no. 76005 Boyoucous) currently in use in many soil laboratories in Ghana, Day's logarithmic formula was employed. The values were then expressed as functions of hydrometer readings to make it possible to incorporate in one single table the hydrometer readings, the mean effective diameters of settling particles at different settling times, and the 'percent finer'. This eliminates the calculations involved in the hydrometer method of mechanical analysis and allows technicians to speed up their work because, with the hydrometer readings obtained from soil suspensions, they can read from the table values of diameter and 'percent finer' at different times.
