Thirty-nine varieties (seven local and 32 exotic) of cowpea varied significantly in respect of various yield and physiological characters. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation and heritability for these characters also varied markedly. Genotypic correlation coefficients were on the whole higher than phenotypic coefficients. Correlation coefficients between all characters and seed yield were negative except pod number and fruiting period which showed highly significant positive correlations with seed yield.
