Preliminary biochemical evidence of insecticide resistance development in Ghanaian populations of cotton aphid, aphis gossypii glover (Homoptera: Aphididae)

Carboxylesterase analyses of samples collected in May 1995 and November 1996 on vegetables in Accra indicated, for the first time in Ghana, potential development of insecticide resistance in populations of cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae), infesting vegetables. Most of the aphids' studied were classified as moderately resistant or resistant. The finding has enormous implications for the vegetable and cotton industries, and calls for a national monitoring network to monitor insecticide use and resistance development in all major insect pests.
