Agriculture is the mainstay of the Ghanaian economy. The sector contributes about 40% of GDP, 30% of export revenue and 35% of total national revenue. Agriculture is also the main employer, employing directly about 60% of the work force or 70% of it, if indirect employment of market women and transport operators engaged in fish, food and meat distribution is considered. The adjustments of the cedi, under the policy of price deregulation, have significantly increased the prices of a variety of traded commodities such is cocoa, rubber, cotton and horticultural products including pineapples. In order to diversify the export base and further reduce the risk of over dependence on cocoa, the Non-Traditional Export (NTE) sector has received promotional attention by Government over the past decade. Non-traditional agricultural exports, of which pineapples are an important component, were valued at over $1OOmin 1996 (representing about 5% of total export earnings).
