Mechanics of [nitrogen] fertilizer transfer to flood water during deep placement [in rice; Philippines]

The study indicates that water plays a major role in reducing fertilizer use efficiencies in flooded paddies. The main reason for the poor performance of the numerous deep placement applicators is that about 40 to 70% of the fertilizer is transferred to the flood water during the placement operation. This occurs as granules and fertilizer solution are pushed into the flood water during the furrow closing operation. With deeper placement, up to 47% of placed fertilizer can also be transferred to flood water due to dissolution during transit to the furrow bottom. Minimizing the dissolution of fertilizer and the upward movement of fertilizer solution from the placement zone can substantially increase fertilizer use efficiencies
