The field experiments provide more conclusive evidence regarding the adaptability of sitao to post-rice conditions. Fresh pod yields comparable to the control were obtained. The crop's adaptability was attributed to the following mechanism; (1) reduction in total leaf area; (2) maintenance of high relative water content; (3) increased stomatal resistance and lower transpiration losses. Earliness as well as good germinability and vigorous growth of seedling under high levels of soil moisture also prove to be of adaptive significance to the crop. Development of long, deep and penetrating roots was also a contributing factor
