The metering device of the IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) 10-row marker-injector was proven to have cyclic variation in the nozzle discharge when operated at its normal operating condition. Furthermore, nozzle discharge was greatly affected by the suction lift, at a lesser extent by the suction head, and not at all urea-water ratio mixture possible. Field performance tests of the machine gave a significant increase in rice yield when used for fertilizer deep placement. The modified metering device with more rigid construction provided a more uniform discharge per injectiion. Two machine configurations were evolved from the original design; the 15-row marker-injector and the 10-row post transplant injector. A 5 row injector was mounted on the IRRI TRI transplanter. A monogram was constructed to aid in determining the required urea-water ratio for a given rate of fertilization, calibration rate and planting pattern
