Nutritional contribution of rice-cowpea diet: effects on the nutritional status of malnourished subjects [Philippines]
1984
Esguerra, L.G.
Three levels of protein and energy combination were fed to 27 malnourished preschool children namely: high-protein, high-energy (HP-HE), high-protein, low-energy (HP-LE), and low-protein, low-energy (LP-LE). The diets were formulated to provide protein essentially low plant sources like cowpea and rice and were fed ad libitum for 49 days. At the end of the experiment, wasting of muscles in marasmic children decreased and edema among kwashiorkor children disappeared. Weight gains of subjects fed rice-cowpea combination were comparable to those fed control. Weight gains of subjects fed HP-HE diets were significantly higher than those on LP-LE diet (P0.05)
