Energy balances on aerobic fermentations [waste treatment]
1982
Woods, J.L.
A method for analysing the energy flows in fermentation process and predicting the equilibrium temperature is described. Experimental work on laboratory and pilot scale equipment is described. The results indicate the benefits of increasing temperature in terms of pollution and pathogen reduction rates. The rate of microbial heat release was also measured. From these results and the energy flow analysis, a prediction for a scaled up system is made. The analysis is also applied to anaerobic biogas systems for treating animal wastes and palm oil mill effluent. Small scale systems are discussed in terms of energy flow and the temperature that can be achieved
