Replacement of cogon (Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beau) vegetation under coconut with leguminous covercrops [Philippines]
1981
Abad, R.G. | Juan, N.C. San
Replacement of 'cogon' vegetation with the covercrops is achieved in 4 to 7 months from sowing of the legume seeds. Total costs of operation per hectare ranges fromP1,770.74 (Method I) to P1,793.58 (Method 2). While return of investment is not immediately achieved, strong considerations should be placed on the following advantages from covercropping: elimination of tough crop-weed competition, improvement in soil fertility and physical condition, substantial reduction in weeding operations (and expenses) and yield improvement in the long run. Moreover, in an intercropping system, the simultaneous similar benefits that are derived by intercrops such as cacao and lanzones under coconut through covercrop establishment should be highly considered
