Methodologies in research and development of practical integrated pest control are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the crucial need for dedicated advisory services and for farmer education. The fundamental importance of establishing pest thresholds is highlighted, despite inherent errors in determining them. Examples are given of successful integrated control practices and of complex situations such as pest control of rice pests where important progress is being made towards effective integrated control practices
