Oviposition by the pink borer, Sesamia inferens (W)
1983
Muttalib, S.A. | Rahman, M.M. | Quayum, M.A.
Laboratory studies were made to investigate the preoviposition period and egg-laying behaviour of the pink borer, S. inferens. The preoviposition period varied from 1.71+-0.11to 2.09+-0.34 days in different generations. Analysis of variance indicate that the difference in preoviposition period of S. inferens in different generations were significant (P 0.05 F=6.56). The maximum preovopisition period was observed in the 6th generation (2.09+-0.04 days) and minimum (1.62+-0.08 days) in the 3rd generation. The oviposition period varied from 2.63+-0.17 days in different generations. The maximum oviposition period (4.38) was observed in the 6th generation and minimum (2.63) in the 3rd generation. Analysis of variance shows that the oviposition period of S. inferens varied significantly (P 0.01, F=14.24) through six successive generations. Immediately before oviposition the female move up and down the plant and probe with her oviposition until a suitable site for oviposition is located. After a number of such attempts at different places of the plant body it finally settles cown for oviposition within 3-5 min
