Intercropping or mixed cropping of wheat with lentil, chickpea or mustard
1981
Whaley, R. | Islam, N. (Bangladesh Agricultural Research Inst., Joydebpur. Div. of Agronomy)
Six experiments in various regions of Bangladesh tested the effects of growing wheat mixed or intercropped with lentil, chickpea, or mustard using various ratios of seed rates. In most trials the monocrops at 100% of the recommended seed rates outyielded the same crop grown as mixed or intercrop but combined yields of the two crops gave land equivalent ratios (LER) greater than 1.00. The average LER's for wheat/lentil, wheat/chickpea, and wheat/mustard were 1.27, 1.23, and 1.39 respectively. Results showed that the best combination was wheat/lentil. Site to site variations in the different crop combination yields were large and the reasons are discussed. Variations in wheat yields were closely correlated with spikes per m2.
