Profitability of fertilizing coconuts in selected Mindanao farms in the Philippines

A yearly simple cost-benefit analysis was made on 11 on-farm fertilizer trials established in 1975 to 1978 covering five provinces and cities in Mindanao involving 24 fertilizer and 11 control treatments. On the average, 41 per cent of the fertilizer treatments incurred losses in the first year; one percent in the second year while in the third year all fertilizer treated palms were already gaining. Generally, results indicate that fertilizer application in coconuts is still a profitable venture even during a depressed economic situation. And if copra price is favorable initial return to investment could even be realized one year after initial fertilizer application
