Aphelenchoid nematodes found associated with coconut palms affected by wilt disease in Socorro, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines

An undescribed plant parasitic nematode belonging to the family Aphelenchidae was extracted in abundant numbers from stem tissues of wilt-affected coconut palms in Socorro, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. The nematode is very long and has a slender body with a set-off head region which is narrower than the body and not annulated. The stylet is short and the median bulb is ovate to slightly elongate, while the esophagus overlaps ventrally. The vulva of the adult female which has an overlapping flap is located about 95% of the body whose short tail has a pointed terminus. The adult male has a ventrally curved tail with caudal celae. The nematode bears some similarities to Rhadinaphelenchus cocophilus especially in so far as the males are concerned although the Philippine specimen is much longer (about 2 1/2 times in males and 4 times in females). In addition, the location of the vulva relative to the body length and the conical pointed tail in female are distinct morphological features
