Response of flue-cured tobacco variety NCBY to different levels of nitrogen and row spacing
1985
Mosura, E.F. | Retales, R.O. | Manalili, M.D.
Application of 90 kg N/ha produced the highest yield (1.93t/ha), grade index (3.68) and gross returns (20,908 pesos/ha). Yield increased with the addition of nitrogen but the physical quality decreased, thus, lowering the gross returns. Nicotine content increased (0.6% to 1.17%) logarithmically with N level while reducing sugar (23%) was highest at 60 kg N/ha, then decreased as nitrogen level increased. Rapid nicotine synthesis at higher N would deplete the sugar reserve used as source of energy in nitrate reduction process, resulting to low reducing sugar content. Row spacing did not affect the growth yield and quality of NCBY except plant height.
