Development of tilapia broodstock for genetic studies
1985
Anon.
The following preliminary crosses were made: (1) Tilapia nilotica x Tilapia nilotica, (2) Tilapia mossambica x Tilapia nilotica, (3) Tilapia nilotica x Tilapia mossambica, and (4) Tilapia mossambica x Tilapia mossambica. The purebred and hybrid fry obtained from each cross were reared separately and stocked in cages in Laguna Lake. The sarcoplasmic protein of nine hybrid fish from a female Tilapia nilotica x male Tilapia mossambica were investigated. The hybrid pattern showed two bands representing the fast moving allele of Tilapia nilotica and the slower allele of Tilapia mossambica. The pattern was similar to those obtained from Tilapia nilotica contaminated with Tilapia mossambica. Some morphological traits of the hybrid were observed to be inherited from the female parent (Tilapia nilotica), others from the male parent (Tilapia mossambica), and a few intermediate between the hybrid were observed to be inherited from the female parents
