Tools and equipment for processing feed root crops

Fernandez, C.P.
Processing of root crops for animal feeds mainly involves size reduction operations. Size reduction has to be carried out to enhance the digestibility of the tubers. Processing involves chipping, drying, grinding and pelletizing. Tools and equipment in processing include chipper, dryer, grinder, pelletizer and mixer. Chipping or partially reducing the size of tubers facilitates efficient drying and storage. Chipping also prevents jamming of feed grinders during grinding operations. Drying of chips can be done through the following methods: sundrying on cement floors, shelf-tray drying, and artificial heat drying. Feed grinder is used to reduce the size of feed materials. There are four classes of feed grinders: hammer mill, burn mill, combination mill and roller mill. Feed pellets are obtained by grinding and hardening dried chips into cylindrical shape. The two types of feed mixers are the continuous mixers and the batch mixers.
